Senior Thoughts During Finals Week

Senior Thoughts During Finals Week

As my time as a college undergrad comes to a close, I’m finding myself reminiscing about these past four years. When they say that college goes by fast, they’re not kidding. As I sit here writing this to avoid actually studying for finals, I have some final thoughts that I’d like to share about my days in college that will [hopefully] help y’all in your future endeavors.

  • Go Greek! I’m not being dramatic when I say that this is the best thing that ever happened to me. Greek life has made me a leader that I never thought I could be, and has given me friends that will be there for the rest of my life.
  • Get involved. Because I got involved, I got a second chance at pursuing my passion for dance.
  • When will I ever learn to not procrastinate? Don’t be like me and create a habit of procrastinating early on in your college career.
  • If you need help, ask for it. I’m still having a hard time learning this.
  • I’m almost 22 and still wondering where my Hogwarts acceptance letter is. It probably got lost in the mail or something. What I’m trying to say is never give up hope that something great is coming.
  • It’s okay to go through tough times and lose yourself, college is the time to make mistakes and learn from them.
  • Always work to make today better than tomorrow in all aspects.
  • Work hard and keep striving no matter how hard things get.
  • Dance parties are necessary at all times of the day.
  • Be careful who you trust, not everyone wants to be your friend.
  • Get to know your professors.
  • Get an internship – or 3 – you can only learn so much in the classroom. Real world experience in the workforce will teach you so much more.
  • Be kind, you never know what someone is going through.

While I could probably write a novel about all of the things I’ve learned in college, this is all I’ve got for now.

Take care of yourselves and good luck on finals!

My Month in Pictures

My Month in Pictures

Hi friends! I know I went on a bit of a hiatus this past month, but life and school have been crazy hectic lately. With classes coming to an end and graduation quickly approaching I’ve been a busy bee, and running on very little sleep. Because of this, I decided I’d give you a look into my life this past month in pictures!

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

That’s all for this week as I return to writing my final papers and putting the finishing touches on my Senior portfolio. Take care of each other!

Is Originality A Thing of the Past?

Is Originality A Thing of the Past?

Lately I’ve been struggling with this question. Everywhere I go, someone is ripping off someone else, claiming someone else’s work as their own or encouraging others to do the same. They say imitation is the greatest form of flattery, but just how far does flattery go before it is insulting?

I, personally, have always hated the idea of stealing someone else’s work, another person’s ideas, etc. We’re taught from a young age that it’s bad to plagiarize and it will get you suspended or expelled from school. However, in the “real world,” if we plagiarize, we will most likely be sued. So why do people continue to do so? Is it really that difficult to formulate your own ideas or devise your own style?

Recently I was told that my writing was not nearly as good as someone else’s. The person insulting my writing had no idea why I wouldn’t just use the other person’s writing since it is “so much better.” I find there to be so much wrong with this situation, and not just because my writing was insulted. I’m left wondering why it is not okay to use my own words, voice and style, and why originality is dwindling.

That wasn’t the only situation I’ve experienced, I’ve witnessed it among other bloggers I follow as well. While I utilize other blogs to inspire me, I find it extremely unnecessary to take their entire ideas, posts, layouts, etc. and claiming them as my own. Your blog is supposed to be a reflection of yourself, not taking others personalities/styles.Perhaps, people are afraid to use their own work for fear of failure. They see others succeeding and want the same success so they decide that they want that exact same success for themselves. Seems valid right? Wrong. I’ve failed multiple times with finding the right blog style and layout that was completely me, but I’m working my way up and slowly but surely finding my way.

Liberating My Mind with 50 Questions, Pt. 2

Liberating My Mind with 50 Questions, Pt. 2

As promised, here is the second and final part to last week’s prompt of 50 Questions That Will Free Your Mind from where I left off (26 on the actual list)!

  1.  Would you rather lose all of your old memories, or never be able to make new ones? Lose all of my old memories
  2.  Is it possible to know the truth without challenging it first? Yes, but I feel as though it really depends on the situation
  3. Has your greatest fear ever come true? No, thank God!
  4. Do you remember that time 5 years ago when you were extremely upset? Does it matter now? No and no
  5. What is your happiest childhood memory? What makes it so special? Experiencing Disney World for the first time at the age of 5, I always heard the hype about it and wanted to be a Disney princess myself so being able to actually be in the middle of all of the magic with my family really made it so special. It was even more awe-inspiring when I went back at the age of 17 with my family and the magic was still there. It truly is the happiest place on earth!
  6. At what time in your recent past have you felt most passionate and alive? I feel most passionate and alive whenever I have a challenge placed in front of me in which I tend to doubt my abilities, and come out of it successful and proving to myself that I am able to overcome anything I set my mind to.
  7. If not now, then when? Eventually
  8. If you haven’t achieved it yet, then what do you have to lose? Absolutely nothing to lose, but everything to gain
  9. Have you ever been with someone, said nothing, and walked away feeling like you had the best conversation ever? No because I almost always have something to say!
  10. Why do religions that support love cause so many wars? Ignorance, lack of tolerance, and I think a lot of it is based on where they were from and how they were raised; If they were raised with violence and destruction as the only answer to problems, then that’s all that they know and understand.
  11. Is it possible to know, without a doubt, what is good and what is evil? Yes
  12. If you just won a million dollars would you quit your job? LOL no
  13. Would you rather have less work to do or more work that you actually enjoy doing? More work that I enjoy doing
  14. Do you feel like you’ve lived this day a hundred times before? No
  15. When was the last time you marched into the dark with only the soft glow of an idea you strongly believed in? Honestly, I’m not too sure; I’ve never really been completely in the dark about something yet.
  16. If you knew that everyone you know was going to die tomorrow was going to die today, who would you visit? What kind of morbid question is this? Really? You expect me to actually make a decision?
  17. Would you be willing to reduce your life expectancy by 10 years to become extremely attractive or famous? Absolutely not
  18. What is the difference between being alive and truly living? Being alive is simply going through everyday motions and just existing while truly living is doing everything you want to do, making a name for yourself, going out into the world and doing something to change someone’s life.
  19. When is it time to stop calculating risk and rewards and just go ahead and do what you know is right? Now
  20. If we learn from our mistakes, then why are we so afraid to make mistakes? I don’t think we are afraid of making the mistake itself, but the result of making the mistake and what might happen because of it.
  21. What would you do differently if you knew nobody would judge you? I’d go with my gut and do what I want in any and all cases without thinking of possible repercussions from those closest to me who’s opinions actually matter to me.
  22. When was the last time you noticed the sound of your own breathing? Yesterday when I noticed my asthma was acting up.
  23. What do you love? Have any of your recent actions openly expressed this love? Spending time with loved ones and writing; I believe that I try to do everything with love so I hope that through my blog and the smallest interactions with those closest to me that my love is expressed.
  24. In 5 years from now will you remember what you did yesterday? What about the day before that? No and no
  25. Decisions are being made right now. The question is: Are you making them for yourself or are you letting others make them for you? I’m making them for myself.

Well that’s all she wrote, folks! Stay tuned for the next post and happy finals week!

Keeping Up With Kourtney: November Edition

Keeping Up With Kourtney: November Edition

Graduation// This past week I applied for college graduation this spring. It didn’t hit me until I was laying in bed that night and was pondering what I’m doing with my life after school. I actually cannot believe how fast these last four years have flown by, and, to be completely honest, I don’t know that I’m entirely ready to grow up.

Tropical Smoothie Café// Yesterday I finally stopped in to see what all of the hype was about, and I must say, I didn’t hate it. I highly recommend going to check out the sweet nectar of the gods for yourself because it’s pretty fantastic if you ask me. For my first go, I tried Sunrise Sunset (strawberries, pineapple, mango, and orange juice), but I definitely want to try pretty much everything on the menu. I’m sure this will end up becoming a new addiction!

Dragonfly In Amber// I’m almost finished with the second book of the Outlander book series, and I’m dying for the next season to premier on television. I seriously think I’m having withdrawals.

Script Handwriting// For some odd reason, I’ve grown slightly obsessive over my handwriting and often find myself attempting to imitate the various script fonts I find on Tumblr and Pinterest.

Boyfriend// Anyone who knows me knows that I am a military girlfriend, and I’m so elated that my boyfriend will finally be home in a few days after being away for six long months!! I apologize in advance if I go on a slight hiatus while he’s home!!

DNCE// Joe Jonas is back, ladies and gents, with a new band and new sound. I barely recognized his voice when I heard their first hit Cake By the Ocean. I cannot stop listening to this extremely danceable song!

That’s all for this week. Have a super fab weekend!

An Open Letter To My Little Diamonds

An Open Letter To My Little Diamonds

My Dear Little Diamonds 1 & 2,

I’ve had this post planned for a quite some time, yet every time I sat down to write it, I wasn’t really sure where to begin. I guess I’ll start with this: from the moment I met you both, I knew there was something extraordinary about you; you were, and still are, determined, beautiful, confident, intelligent young women with the potential to do whatever it is that you set your minds to. Obviously, I like those qualities in the people I surround myself with. I have wanted you both as my little diamonds since the moment I met you, and you are both so incredibly special to me.

As your Big Diamond, it is my job to be your mentor, someone you can go to whenever you need advice, a hug or food (because, let’s face it, food is always the solution). I promise to always be honest and open with you, and to always have an emergency chocolate & chick flick stash for when you have a bad day. I promise to be not only your sister, but best friend and confidant.

My dear, sweet Meme, within just one year I have seen you grow so much in this sorority, and I could not be more proud of you. You have stepped up to take on leadership positions that alphas wouldn’t normally touch, and I have seen your confidence grow immensely. I hope that you continue to grow and lead so fearlessly in our chapter, and teach our alphas to do the same; they have a wonderful mentor to get them through their initial member period.

Little Diamond #2, you may not know who I am yet, nor will you until tomorrow, but Megan and I are so elated to welcome you into our little family. I see so much potential and drive in you that I cannot wait to see displayed in the chapter. Even knowing that I am a senior, you chose me as your Big Diamond and I couldn’t be more honored to spend the last year of my college career with you. I am so excited to reveal myself to you tomorrow!

Although I only have this last year in the chapter, know that I am ALWAYS here for you both no matter the circumstances. I love you both so much and I cannot wait to see all that you accomplish in the chapter and the future.

Holy $#!% I’m A Senior: A Reflection

Holy $#!% I’m A Senior: A Reflection

Today I embark on a new journey and begin my senior year of college. It seems like just yesterday I was a shy, clueless, awkward freshman that didn’t know how lame it actually was to wear your keys on your lanyard around your neck.I also had little to no social skills whatsoever coming from a ridiculously small private school. Nonetheless, I was bound and determined to become a nurse anesthetist as I intended to my whole life. This, my friends, was my first mistake in my college career.

Innocent freshmen with no idea what we were getting ourselves into
Innocent freshmen with no idea what we were getting ourselves into

About halfway through my first semester, I realized that I was not on the path that I was supposed to be on; my grades were slipping, I was constantly exhausted, I lost all motivation, and- in all this chaos- I managed to lose myself. You see, I’ve always been a planner, type-A personality, and OCD, so when I came to the realization that I wasn’t where I was supposed to be, I lost my zest for life; I just wasn’t the same person I was before. Because of this, my mental health and relationship at the time began to deteriorate. I broke up with my boyfriend of two years and just wanted to be alone, I knew I had to get better and turned to working out and going out in order to make myself happy again. After countless meetings with my adviser, and more aptitude tests than any human being should ever take, I found myself pursuing a career in communication and public relations- an umbrella category for all of my passions- and something I had always wanted to pursue, but did not think was actually possible.

Finally able to let my preppy flag fly
Finally able to let my preppy flag fly

My sophomore year, I took a huge leap of faith and tried out for the competitive dance team on campus. By some crazy miracle, I made the team despite not dancing for five years. I also did something I swore I never would do and went through sorority formal recruitment. You can probably imagine my surprise when I fell in love with Alpha Delta Pi and accepted a bid from them on Bid Day. Thanks to both of these organizations, I became more confident and started to break out of my introverted shell. That fall, I unexpectedly met a boy who turned out to be the man of my dreams even though I swore I was going to focus on my career for the rest of my life. I became more social, and things started to turn around. I was genuinely happy once again.

My junior year was a growing experience for my maturity as I conquered the challenges and lessons life threw my way. My classes were extremely difficult, I took an executive board position in my sorority, my boyfriend informed me that he decided to serve in the military, I was in a terrible car accident, and my anxiety was at an all new height. I promised myself that I would not revert back to the person I was freshman year, and with the help of my family, friends, and boyfriend, I began to set small-scale goals for myself (this was a huge step due to my type-A personality). I achieved my goal of making the Dean’s List, and I figured out how to prioritize my time because it really is so precious.

If you would have told me four years ago that I would be sitting where I am today, I would have laughed in your face and told you that you were absolutely crazy. However, as I sit here reflecting on the past three years of my college career, I wouldn’t change a thing. College is a time to not only learn what is necessary in the classroom, but to make mistakes and learn from life experience. I am so lucky to have stumbled so clumsily to where I am now, standing with more poise and confidence than I ever could have imagined. Bring it on, senior year, I’m ready for ya!

Cheers!
