Fall Fashion Favorites Under $100

Sweater | Necklace (similar) | Skirt (purchased last year from J. Crew) | Loafers

Fall is officially here! Sweater weather is my absolute favorite, mostly because sweaters are a signature staple of mine. There are a TON of great sales going on right now, making it the perfect time to stock up on your favorite fall fashion pieces. Despite the fact that my goal this month is to not spend on anything I don’t need in order to save for an upcoming trip, I can’t help my habit of online window shopping. In lieu of feeding my shopping addiction, I’ve put together a list of my favorite fall pieces – both classic and trendy – that won’t break the bank, and where to find them.

Classic Pullover Sweater // Not gunna lie, I have this Cotton-wool Teddie Sweater in three different colors because I love it so much. They’re so cozy and easy to layer as the temps drop. Bonus: It’s currently on sale in all J.Crew Factory stores!

Shirtdress  // I love a good shirtdress, and Abercrombie has the perfect one for fall. This plaid shirtdress can be dressed up or down for any occasion this season. If you’re willing to spend a bit more money, I’m also crushing on this tie-waist shirtdress from J. Crew.

Balloon-Sleeve Pullover Sweater // As I previously mentioned, I’m a bit of a sweater fanatic, so it’s no surprise that I’m obsessed with this fall’s trend of balloon-sleeves. I just may have to break my no-spend rule to snag this sweater  from Madewell in Egyptian Gold.

Puffer Vest // For those chilly evenings spent at football games or cider mills, a puffer vest is a must! J. Crew has an excellent quilted option with several fall colors to choose from. I’ll take one of each!

Riding Boots // Every woman needs one staple pair of riding boots in her closet. This season, DSW is offering numerous options at great prices, including these black Iona boots by Tommy Hilfiger, G by Guess’s Herly Riding Boots, and Lauren by Ralph Lauren’s Menna Two-Toned Riding Boot.

Booties // Continuing on the topic of shoes, booties are also a must-have for fall and winter. I’m actually in need of some new ones, so I have my eye on these Tommy Hilfiger Ruthee Block-Heel Ankle Booties in black.

Leopard-Print Accessories // This is one trend I stand behind this year; while I can’t rock head to toe animal print like some can, I love incorporating a pop of print into my outfits. I have a particular soft spot for leopard print, especially these loafers by Louise et Cie. I mean, seriously, I’m OBSESSED with them!

Now I want to hear from you! What’s your go-to fall fashion staple?

YOU GUYS, my favorite season is right around the corner, and call me crazy, but I’m SO ready for sweater weather! Last week, my friend Bri (peep her blog here) and I went down to Campus Martius Park in Detroit to start shooting some fall outfits, and it made me so.freaking.excited. for the coming season. I hope you enjoy some of my favorite photos from the shoot of me looking awkward throughout this post. I digress – back to what you came here for. I am OBSESSED with all of the fall basics – sweaters, puffy vests, riding boots, blanket scarves – but today I want to talk about some of the trends for this upcoming fall that I’m most excited for, as well as those that I could do without. Keep scrolling to discover the trends I’m loving and leaving be this season.

Love ‘Em

Pleats // We’ve already been seeing this trend everywhere and on everyone from Karlie Kloss to Meghan Markle. Pleats are such a classic fashion element that you can’t go wrong with; pleated dresses and skirts alike can be dressed up or down for any occasion. I recently picked up this whimsical skirt from J. Crew – I simply couldn’t pass it up! A few other items I’m loving are this pleated midi from Banana Republic, and this pleated wrap dress from Nordstrom.

Tweed // Chanel has been capitalizing on this trend since the 1920s, making it a closet staple for business women around the world. To say that I’m a little geeked to see it everywhere this fall is an understatement. While I’m not exactly in the position where I can afford Chanel, this Zara skirt and blazer are perfect power pieces to slay the work day!

Animal Print // Everyone needs at least one fabulous animal print piece in their closet, so now is the perfect time to stock up on some timeless pieces to add a bold pop to any outfit. This season, I have my eye on these adorable leopard print pumps from J. Crew Factory, and this sweater with a hint of print from J. Crew.

Bold Plaid // Plaid flannel is a fall staple, but this year people are literally mixing it up. Expect to see ensembles of  different plaid colors and prints paired together, and bright colored plaid (think Clueless). As a former Catholic school girl, I have to admit that I have a soft spot for plaid. I’m loving this Zara midi skirt, and Urban Outfitters’ plaid beret.

Western // I’m going to be honest, I was a bit apprehensive about this trend initially, but it’s really grown on me! Cowboy boots, fringe jackets, and prairie dresses are taking over this fall. This Zara blouse, MICHAEL by Michael Kors suede booties, and Free People prairie dress are some Western-inspired pieces to add to your wardrobe this fall.

Neon // Most recently, the Kardashian-Jenner sisters have been posting themselves on Instagram killing the neon game. While many people can pull this trend off, neon doesn’t mix well with my style nor my fair skin so this is a trend you won’t find me rocking this fall.

80’s Inspired // Falling right in line with the neon trend, pieces reminiscent of the 1980s are resurfacing this fall. That’s right, it’s time to pull out your parents’ high school yearbooks to draw inspiration for this season. Items ranging from blazers with shoulder pads to sequins are all the rage, but it is one trend I will not be looking forward to. If this is up your alley, here are a few finds to get you started: sequin sheath dress – Express, plaid ruched sleeve boyfriend blazer – Express, plaid wrap-front skort romper – Urban Outfitters

Logos // Prepare to see the logos plastered everywhere. We’ve been seeing this a lot lately with the popular Gucci tee and Gucci Belt (dupe here for those of us ballin’ on a budget), and this fall we’ll see more people taking the opportunity to be walking billboards for various brands. I left this trend behind in high school, but I wouldn’t be opposed to pulling out my first Michael Kors bag (similar style).

What trend are you looking forward to rocking this fall?

Fall Bucket List

Fall Bucket List

As I have mentioned numerous times throughout my blog, I LOVE FALL! There’s something about fall in Michigan that makes it feel magical: the changing leaves, brisk weather, comfy flannel, and cider and donuts, of course!

Because there are so many fun fall activities in Michigan, I narrowed my favorites down to the top 12 must-do’s this year!

3 Fall TV Shows Worth Watching

Fall is my absolute favorite time of year in Michigan: hot cider, cozy sweaters, and some of my favorite tv shows are back on air! I really don’t watch too much tv as I don’t really have time for it, but there are a select few *cough* GoT *cough* that I always make sure to pencil into my schedule. Here are three of my favorites you won’t want to miss this fall.

    1. American Horror Story: Cult // I got into the American Horror Story franchise my sophomore year of college when my friends that lived on my floor invited me to watch the season premier of Coven (season 3), and I’ve been hooked ever since. While the last few seasons have been hit-or-miss, this season promises a good scare. Set in Detroit during the 2016 election, there is still not much known about the season as a whole. Season 7 of AHS kicks off TONIGHT at 10PM.
    2. Outlander // My love for Outlander began after I watched the first episode from the first season, and spawned from there. The series follows Claire Beauchamp as she journeys to Scotland with her husband following World War II where she mysteriously falls back in time to the 18th century and falls in love with a Scotsman Jamie Fraser. Today I’m working on the fifth book in the incredible series by Diana Gabaldon. The third season of Outlander begins Sunday, September 10th.
    3. Fuller House // Growing up, I LOVED watching Full House, so you can imagine my excitement for the spinoff following the Tanner clan today. If you don’t know already, Fuller House focuses on DJ and her children following the death of her husband. Part 1 of the third season comes to Netflix Friday, September 22 – aka Full House’s 30th anniversary!

What are shows you are looking forward to this fall?

Fall Fashion Trend Watch

This season, we’re seeing fashion come full-circle drawing inspiration from the past and putting a contemporary twist on the classics.

Statement Sleeves // The trend that took over the summer is now invading shopping racks this fall. Featuring everything from ruffles to bell sleeves, styles can range from eccentric to sophisticated – perfect for work or play.

Power Red // This color is EVERYWHERE this fall. Inspired by female empowerment, this trend is bound to make a statement. Gigi Hadid rocked the tonal red look at Max Mara’s runway show.

Suiting // Continuing on the theme of empowered women, the broad shouldered pantsuit as seen at Alexander Wang and Victoria Beckham runway shows is back and chic-er than ever.

Vintage-Inspired Fur // If you were looking for an occasion to bust out your grandma’s mink scarf from circa 1953, you are in luck – fur is making a comeback this fall! Mark Jacobs, Michael Kors and Céline have all donned fur coats and accessories on the runway this season. Looks like it’s time to update your winter coat collection!

Corduroy // As seen at shows such as Mark Jacobs and Prada, it’s now socially acceptable to incorporate this 70s staple into your daily look again.

Fishnets // The previous trend of fishnets under destroyed denim is long gone, and being replaced by a more feminine approach to the stockings. Recently they’ve been seen paired with skirts, dresses, and schoolboy blazers.

What are some trends you are looking forward to seeing this fall?

Fall Favorites

Hello

Hello Friends!

Fall is officially here in Michigan and I could not be more excited since it is my absolute favorite time of the year! In celebration, I thought I’d share some of my favorite things about fall and things that I am obsessed with at the current moment in time.

Chunky Cable knit Sweaters// They can be layered with an adorable pair of boots and jeans or just paired with leggings. My go-to place for amazing sweaters is J Crew!

Fleece Pullovers// Continuing the theme of comfy garments, I’ve always been a huge fan of your average crew neck and quarter-zip fleece, but I’ve never known love until I bought my Patagonia Snap-T Fleece Pullover. Okay, maybe that’s a tad over-dramatic, but, in all reality, it’s quite fabulous and I highly recommend checking it out!

Cider Mills// This really speaks for itself, the best fall past time in Michigan; donuts, caramel apples, and warm cider…. Nothing beats it!

Guacamole Chips// Okay, so it’s not quite fall themed, but they are one of my latest obsessions. If you enjoy tortilla chips and guac, you’ll LOVE the organic twist by Food Should Taste Good. I’ll admit, I was a tad apprehensive initially, but I ended up demolishing the whole bag with my friend. Yes, they are that good!

Quilted/Puffy/Fleece Vests// Last, but certainly not least, I find it quite essential to have, at least, one vest to sport during this time of the year. Vests are perfect for layering on particularly chilly days; it’s no surprise that my favorite comes from the store that holds my heart: J Crew!

What are some of your favorite fall things? Comment below and don’t forget, sharing is caring!

Is Greek Life For You?

Is Greek Life For You?

It’s nearing that time of year again, time to put away our summer whites, break out our textbooks, and-oh yeah- IT’S SORORITY RECRUITMENT SEASON! While I am super excited to meet new people and expand my sisterhood, I know many women are debating the idea of going through recruitment. I get it, recruitment is a daunting experience, and even I was extremely apprehensive when I signed up; However, I truly believe my recruitment and sorority experience has enriched my life in more ways than one.

I, like many of those debating [or completely against] the idea of Greek life, believed that Greek life was exactly as it is negatively portrayed in movies. I did not believe that I would fit in anywhere in a large group of girls with personalities as large as the bows in their hair. When initially approached with the idea of going Greek, I straight up laughed in my future roommate’s face and politely replied “HELL NO!” Yet, here I am today, executive board member and soon-to-be alum, who managed to fall completely in love with her sorority and all it has to offer.

Before you decide if Greek life is for you, you will want to consider the following questions and facts:

The moment I revealed to my Little Diamond sister

What do you want to gain in joining a fraternity/sorority? When considering various chapters to join, it is important to keep in mind that it’s not about how you’ll look with their letters draped across your chest or how cute you’ll look while throwing what you know. Greek life is about making special connections both in and out of your chapter. Are you looking to get involved with a specific philanthropy? Do you want to expand your social network? Do you just want a group of people to go out and have fun with? Choose the chapter that shares the same passions as you.

Can you keep up your grades? Let’s be honest, Greek life is a huge time commitment with mandatory events such as workshops, ritual, socials, etc. With so much going on, it is easy to exercise poor time management and not make your grades a priority; however, this can be extremely detrimental to your membership. According to a study by Hofstra University, 70% of Greeks graduate in five years or less, whereas 50% of non-Greeks graduate in this time frame. Not only that, but Greeks across the nation are responsible for having the highest GPA of all campus organizations.

Do you want to be successful in your future endeavors? Becoming a member of a fraternity or sorority provides one with endless opportunities for personal growth both in social and professional aspects. You only hear about the negatives of Greek life in the media, but do you know about all of the great things Greeks have done? According to USA Today, 85% of Fortune 500 executives were members of a fraternity and the first female senator was the member of a sorority. Furthermore, the leadership opportunities Greek life provides puts members at a social advantage one would not have otherwise; chapter leaders are elected by fellow active members and advisers, members also have the opportunity to participate as leaders in organizations such as National Panhellenic Council, IFC, and Greek Council.

Our National Philanthropy, our pride joy: Ronald McDonald House Charities
Our National Philanthropy, our pride joy: Ronald McDonald House Charities

Are you willing to put aside time to give back to the community? A study by the New Jersey Institute of Technology shows that Greeks volunteer for approximately 850,000 hours a year and raise over $7 million annually for various philanthropies. Greeks are held accountable for being the largest network of volunteers in the nation (slap that on a headline). We don’t volunteer because we are forced to, we do it because of our passion for both our national philanthropies, and those of other organizations as well.

For more statistics on fraternities and sororities, check out the links to various articles and studies I provided above. If you have any questions about my experience in a sorority or regarding what to expect during recruitment, shoot me an email or comment below!

Happy Labor Day Weekend!

Style Watch: Fall Nail Colors

Style Watch: Fall Nail Colors

Happy Last Day of August!

As my favorite season quickly approaches, I am left pondering a multitude of questions: Is it too early for my favorite winter dark shades? Is it too late for my favorite pastels? In light of my latest predicament of which hue would best flatter my nails in the upcoming fall months, I have compiled a list of some of my staple fall colors according to the latest trends out of my personal nail polish stash.

**This list is in order of the shades you see in the featured image above*

  1. Essie, “Ballet Slippers”- this beautiful pastel/opaque color can be paired with everything; it’s charming, but does not take away from the outfit.
  2. Essie, “Go Ginza”- another pastel (think a light lavender) that fairs well in early fall. An excellent pop of color for back to school days.
  3. Essie, “Sand Tropez”- nude can be worn in every season, this just happens to be my personal favorite
  4. Essie, “Mochacino”- possibly the only shade of brown I would ever sport on my nails, plus it has a hint of sparkle
  5. Nicole by O.P.I., “My Empire…My Rules”- a chic grey with hunter green undertones, an unexpected winner in my book!
  6. O.P.I., “Glitzerland”- my go-to polish to add some sparkle! I wear mostly silver rings so the gold adds the perfect glittery contrast
  7. China Glaze, “For Audrey”- Tiffany blue, need I say more?
  8. O.P.I., “I Have A Herring Problem”- a unique blue-gray with gold sparkles, I don’t wear this shade nearly as much as I probably should; it’s definitely an underrated color
  9. Essie, “Bahama Mama”- love love LOVE this dark magenta color
  10. Essie, “Forever Yummy”- Because red looks absolutely fabulous in every season!

What are some of your favorite fall nail colors? Comment below and I’ll be sure to check them out!
