Week In Review, Vol. IV

Week In Review, Vol. IV

Hey hey hey! It’s been a minute since my last update, and life has been crazy lately so it’s time for a quick review of what’s been happening on my side of town. Since my quick trip to Vegas last month, I’ve been on hiatus with blogging since life happens; however, this is all starting to turn around this week. Life is slowing down a bit, the holiday season is upon us, and I could not be more thrilled! I love the holidays. Yes, I’m 100% that person that starts drinking peppermint mochas and listening to Christmas music right after Halloween NO SHAME! I digress, let’s dive into the recap, shall we?

Me and my guy after the wedding festivities in the Flamingo Garden

Vegas Recap: In early October, Ryan and I took a brief trip to Las Vegas for his friend’s wedding. When I say brief, I mean VERY brief…  like less than 48 hours brief. Anywho, despite it being super quick we had so much fun! Honestly, I never had a desire to go to Vegas, but we had so much fun in such a short amount of time that we cannot wait to return next year for my best friend’s bachelorette party. We stayed at the Flamingo, which is also where we spent most of our time in the casino, but  I was bummed that we didn’t get to see much of the strip on foot, though I did get to visit the Venetian while I waited for Ry to arrive, which was super cool and slightly trippy. Once he arrived, we all headed to Fremont Street (aka Old Las Vegas) for the evening. Since it was a Sunday night there was not a ton going on, but we enjoyed two of the outdoor concerts taking place. Our last adventure of the trip was ziplining from the roof of the Rio Hotel 500 feet above Vegas. If you know me, you know that I HATE heights! It ended up being an extraordinary experience, but one that I’m fine only doing once. If you have any recommendations of things we should see or do on our next trip to Vegas, leave a comment below!

Recent Purchases:

  • I just ordered these adorable leopard print flats from James Ascher and I’m hoping to get in a few wears with them before the snow falls!
  • Also ordered from James Ascher is the navy and orange Window Pane Open Front Shawl Jacket. The link was removed from the website, but you can see it in my Instagram fashion highlight!
  • I also recently purchased these Ellie Chelsea boots from Target for only $30 to replace my favorite Ralph Lauren booties (RIP) and I’m obsessed. I try to not spend a ton of money on boots for the mere fact that Michigan winters can be pretty gnarly and the sidewalk salt can destroy boots.
  • Finally, I purchased a Quip toothbrush. I’ve had my eye on it for a while, and have heard nothing but good things about the brand so I’m excited to see if it makes a difference. What really drew me to it was the price; it’s super affordable compared to other electric toothbrushes.

Latest Fashion Picks:

  • It’s no secret that I’m a big fan of layering, and this tweed coat from J. Crew would be the perfect top layer as the cold weather rolls in. Plus, tweed is always in style.
  • Believe it or not, my mom actually just picked up a pair of these Faux-Suede Stevie Pants from Old Navy and I want them in every color. Not only are they comfy, but they can be dressed up or down for most occasions.

Looking Ahead: In October, I fell off the workout wagon, so I’ve gotten back on the workout grind with some at home Pilates exercises. That being said, I plan on putting together a health/fitness post about the plan I’m sticking to for the next year, that will most likely come out in early January in lieu of my 2019 goals post. I also am excited to have the next week off of work for the Thanksgiving holiday, which will give me plenty of time to crank out some fun content I have for the blog through the end of the year!

Have a wonderful weekend, everyone!

Fall Fashion Favorites Under $100

Sweater | Necklace (similar) | Skirt (purchased last year from J. Crew) | Loafers

Fall is officially here! Sweater weather is my absolute favorite, mostly because sweaters are a signature staple of mine. There are a TON of great sales going on right now, making it the perfect time to stock up on your favorite fall fashion pieces. Despite the fact that my goal this month is to not spend on anything I don’t need in order to save for an upcoming trip, I can’t help my habit of online window shopping. In lieu of feeding my shopping addiction, I’ve put together a list of my favorite fall pieces – both classic and trendy – that won’t break the bank, and where to find them.

Classic Pullover Sweater // Not gunna lie, I have this Cotton-wool Teddie Sweater in three different colors because I love it so much. They’re so cozy and easy to layer as the temps drop. Bonus: It’s currently on sale in all J.Crew Factory stores!

Shirtdress  // I love a good shirtdress, and Abercrombie has the perfect one for fall. This plaid shirtdress can be dressed up or down for any occasion this season. If you’re willing to spend a bit more money, I’m also crushing on this tie-waist shirtdress from J. Crew.

Balloon-Sleeve Pullover Sweater // As I previously mentioned, I’m a bit of a sweater fanatic, so it’s no surprise that I’m obsessed with this fall’s trend of balloon-sleeves. I just may have to break my no-spend rule to snag this sweater  from Madewell in Egyptian Gold.

Puffer Vest // For those chilly evenings spent at football games or cider mills, a puffer vest is a must! J. Crew has an excellent quilted option with several fall colors to choose from. I’ll take one of each!

Riding Boots // Every woman needs one staple pair of riding boots in her closet. This season, DSW is offering numerous options at great prices, including these black Iona boots by Tommy Hilfiger, G by Guess’s Herly Riding Boots, and Lauren by Ralph Lauren’s Menna Two-Toned Riding Boot.

Booties // Continuing on the topic of shoes, booties are also a must-have for fall and winter. I’m actually in need of some new ones, so I have my eye on these Tommy Hilfiger Ruthee Block-Heel Ankle Booties in black.

Leopard-Print Accessories // This is one trend I stand behind this year; while I can’t rock head to toe animal print like some can, I love incorporating a pop of print into my outfits. I have a particular soft spot for leopard print, especially these loafers by Louise et Cie. I mean, seriously, I’m OBSESSED with them!

Now I want to hear from you! What’s your go-to fall fashion staple?

YOU GUYS, my favorite season is right around the corner, and call me crazy, but I’m SO ready for sweater weather! Last week, my friend Bri (peep her blog here) and I went down to Campus Martius Park in Detroit to start shooting some fall outfits, and it made me so.freaking.excited. for the coming season. I hope you enjoy some of my favorite photos from the shoot of me looking awkward throughout this post. I digress – back to what you came here for. I am OBSESSED with all of the fall basics – sweaters, puffy vests, riding boots, blanket scarves – but today I want to talk about some of the trends for this upcoming fall that I’m most excited for, as well as those that I could do without. Keep scrolling to discover the trends I’m loving and leaving be this season.

Love ‘Em

Pleats // We’ve already been seeing this trend everywhere and on everyone from Karlie Kloss to Meghan Markle. Pleats are such a classic fashion element that you can’t go wrong with; pleated dresses and skirts alike can be dressed up or down for any occasion. I recently picked up this whimsical skirt from J. Crew – I simply couldn’t pass it up! A few other items I’m loving are this pleated midi from Banana Republic, and this pleated wrap dress from Nordstrom.

Tweed // Chanel has been capitalizing on this trend since the 1920s, making it a closet staple for business women around the world. To say that I’m a little geeked to see it everywhere this fall is an understatement. While I’m not exactly in the position where I can afford Chanel, this Zara skirt and blazer are perfect power pieces to slay the work day!

Animal Print // Everyone needs at least one fabulous animal print piece in their closet, so now is the perfect time to stock up on some timeless pieces to add a bold pop to any outfit. This season, I have my eye on these adorable leopard print pumps from J. Crew Factory, and this sweater with a hint of print from J. Crew.

Bold Plaid // Plaid flannel is a fall staple, but this year people are literally mixing it up. Expect to see ensembles of  different plaid colors and prints paired together, and bright colored plaid (think Clueless). As a former Catholic school girl, I have to admit that I have a soft spot for plaid. I’m loving this Zara midi skirt, and Urban Outfitters’ plaid beret.

Western // I’m going to be honest, I was a bit apprehensive about this trend initially, but it’s really grown on me! Cowboy boots, fringe jackets, and prairie dresses are taking over this fall. This Zara blouse, MICHAEL by Michael Kors suede booties, and Free People prairie dress are some Western-inspired pieces to add to your wardrobe this fall.

Leave ‘Em

Neon // Most recently, the Kardashian-Jenner sisters have been posting themselves on Instagram killing the neon game. While many people can pull this trend off, neon doesn’t mix well with my style nor my fair skin so this is a trend you won’t find me rocking this fall.

80’s Inspired // Falling right in line with the neon trend, pieces reminiscent of the 1980s are resurfacing this fall. That’s right, it’s time to pull out your parents’ high school yearbooks to draw inspiration for this season. Items ranging from blazers with shoulder pads to sequins are all the rage, but it is one trend I will not be looking forward to. If this is up your alley, here are a few finds to get you started: sequin sheath dress – Express, plaid ruched sleeve boyfriend blazer – Express, plaid wrap-front skort romper – Urban Outfitters

Logos // Prepare to see the logos plastered everywhere. We’ve been seeing this a lot lately with the popular Gucci tee and Gucci Belt (dupe here for those of us ballin’ on a budget), and this fall we’ll see more people taking the opportunity to be walking billboards for various brands. I left this trend behind in high school, but I wouldn’t be opposed to pulling out my first Michael Kors bag (similar style).

What trend are you looking forward to rocking this fall?

Top 5 E-Newsletters to Kick-Start Your Morning

Top 5 E-Newsletters to Kick-Start Your Morning

Looking to stay more informed with what’s going on in the world? You’ve come to the right place! Beginning in high school, my teachers preached the importance of staying on top of current events. Throughout college, I went about my days with a lack of television which was my primary source for news growing up as I did not read the newspaper. I had several news apps on my phone and newspapers were always available on campus, but I never really took the time – or had the time – to read the articles.

It wasn’t until my senior year of college that I discovered the beauty of e-Newsletters. I could digest the top news stories from around the world in 5 minutes and under. They provided me enough information to develop my own opinion on world affairs, and hold an intelligent conversation. Thus began my love for these quick, information-packed news sources.

Closet Staples for Every Professional Woman

Transitioning into corporate America from college life is no easy feat, especially in the wardrobe department. Luckily for me, I had my sorority Sundays and numerous internships to help me build my professional wardrobe and keep me on the right track to know what is and is not professional. However, my current workplace has everything from casual jeans to full business attire depending on what team you’re on, so it took me a bit to get in the groove of what is and is not acceptable.

I’ve found that having a business capsule wardrobe helps make my outfit planning for work a lot easier. Here are a few primary closet staples every boss babe needs in her wardrobe!

Classic White Oxford // Ralph Lauren never fails in the Oxford department. An Oxford can be paired with most everything, and is perfect for layering in the cooler months.

Feminine Blouse // While an Oxford is extremely versatile, a feminine blouse can make an outfit. Add a little extra embroidery like this Zara high-collar blouse, and you’ll instantly make a statement.

Blazer // I love love love a good blazer! I believe that a well-tailored blazer can instantly dress up any outfit. My personal favorite is the J. Crew Factory Schoolboy Blazer in Navy, as seen on Instagram.

Pencil Skirt // Pretty sure it goes without saying, but every boss babe has AT LEAST one power pencil skirt in their closet. J. Crew Factory has a ton of pencil skirts in varying colors and great for all seasons. Some of my favorite pencil skirts also come from New York and Company; they have everything from a classic black pencil skirt to a fun, flirty patterned skirt.

Sensible Pumps // I used to be that horrible person that buys shoes because they’re cute without really thinking about their comfort level. Don’t be that person! I promise your work conferences are so much more enjoyable when your feet aren’t killing you. Some of the most comfortable (and fashionable) pumps were nearly identical to these black leather pumps from Nine West.

Loafers/Chic Flats // Lately I’ve been obsessed with loafers and pointed-toe flats such as these Sam Endelman Loafers and these pointed-toe ballet flats from Target. Bonus points if you have them in fun colors!

Here are a couple ways to style these classic pieces:

Professional Staples 2

Professional Staples 2 by kerogus featuring a j crew jacket

What are some of your favorite staples for the office?

Fall Fashion Trend Watch

This season, we’re seeing fashion come full-circle drawing inspiration from the past and putting a contemporary twist on the classics.

Statement Sleeves // The trend that took over the summer is now invading shopping racks this fall. Featuring everything from ruffles to bell sleeves, styles can range from eccentric to sophisticated – perfect for work or play.

Power Red // This color is EVERYWHERE this fall. Inspired by female empowerment, this trend is bound to make a statement. Gigi Hadid rocked the tonal red look at Max Mara’s runway show.

Suiting // Continuing on the theme of empowered women, the broad shouldered pantsuit as seen at Alexander Wang and Victoria Beckham runway shows is back and chic-er than ever.

Vintage-Inspired Fur // If you were looking for an occasion to bust out your grandma’s mink scarf from circa 1953, you are in luck – fur is making a comeback this fall! Mark Jacobs, Michael Kors and Céline have all donned fur coats and accessories on the runway this season. Looks like it’s time to update your winter coat collection!

Corduroy // As seen at shows such as Mark Jacobs and Prada, it’s now socially acceptable to incorporate this 70s staple into your daily look again.

Fishnets // The previous trend of fishnets under destroyed denim is long gone, and being replaced by a more feminine approach to the stockings. Recently they’ve been seen paired with skirts, dresses, and schoolboy blazers.

What are some trends you are looking forward to seeing this fall?

Wedding Guest Dresses Under $100

img_2219
Wedding season is officially upon us, and is it just me or does it seem like everyone is getting married lately? The invitations are pouring in, gifts are being purchased, and (if you’re anything like me) you are struggling to find the perfect dress for the nuptials. However, the process of preparing for a wedding  – whether it’s your own, you’re standing up in said wedding, or you’re a guest – can cost a LOT of money.

According to a study by The Knot, a woman spends nearly $500 on average, while men spend about $700. This total includes not only apparel, but gifts, the bachelor/bachelorette party, travel and more. Holy moley!! The last thing you need is to spend a boatload of cash on new attire.

Now, there are a number of things to keep in mind while choosing a dress as a guest:

  • What the color scheme is — you don’t want to be matching the bridesmaids
  • The location of the wedding — if it’s in a church (depending on the religion) you may have to dress more conservatively; if it’s outside, you’ll want to take the weather into account
  • Never EVER wear white to a wedding as a guest unless the wedding invitation urges guests to wear all white for whatever reason

In my search for some new dresses, I’ve compiled a list of {appropriate} wedding guest dresses that won’t break the bank.

Lulu’s Make Me Move Maxi Dress

ASOS Boohoo Floral Plunge Neck Midi Skater Dress

ASOS PrettyLittleThing Ruffle Sleeve Maxi Dress

Nordstrom’s Soprano Lace Off the Shoulder Fit & Flare Dress

Francesca’s Tricia Crochet A-Line Dress

Nasty Gal’s Spring Affair Floral Midi Dress

Modcloth’s Camera Flash Finesse Wrap Dress

NOTE: There are also plenty of other options than buying a new dress, including renting one from a site such as Rent the Runway, borrowing, or simply wearing one you already have.

I’m still on the hunt for a few, so if you have any suggestions yourself, please feel free to reach out and let me know where you like to shop for dresses!
