I recently read a Levo League article that bid the question “What is your word for 2017?” And challenged readers to choose their word for 2017. Initially it seems like such an easy question, but the more I reflected on past years and my goals for this year, I found it quite difficult. This year I want to be healthy, cultured, and, above all, happy.
After lots of pondering, I finally landed on my word for 2017: Positivity.
I’m a cynical person by nature, and I realize the damage that my cynicism does to everyone around me and myself. This is why I’ve decided that this year is going to be different. My goal is to make positivity a habit so that negative thoughts cross my mind less often and, eventually, eliminate negativity all together. The past few years took a toll on my mental health and I currently am having a hard time figuring out my path/purpose in life which has been particularly challenging for me in terms of positivity. However, practicing gratitude daily, getting back in touch with my faith, and are just a few ways I am taking action.

In a recent post, I briefly stated that I was making a number of changes in my life. My goal is to live a more positive, healthy, happy life by making small changes now to help me achieve bigger goals and chase bigger dreams.
Working a desk job, I don’t have much ability to be active throughout the day. After being able to be active while at school (walking across campus to class, dance practices, free gym access, etc), I realized I could not maintain my old habits. With the help of my boyfriend Ryan, I’ve devised a plan consisting of a few lifestyle changes in order to help me stay in shape and, ultimately live a more positive and happy life.
My FitBit is my new best friend. For my birthday a few weeks ago, Ryan bought me a FitBit Alta per my request. While I have yet to reach my daily goal of 10,000 steps, it has motivated me to get up and get moving. At work I tend to take the long route when walking to the water fountain, bathroom and my colleagues offices in order to get the most out of my steps. It also helps a lot with tracking my calorie intake on the app; it’s free and downloads to your phone while activating your FitBit after purchase.
Absolutely no fast food. Ryan and I decided to use the buddy system with this one. By cutting out all fast food, we are cutting out the option of taking the easy way out when it comes to lunch breaks. While I tend crave McDonald’s fries and tacos from Taco Bell, I’m breaking the habit by choosing healthier snack options such as Skinny Pop and baked chips. I also allow myself the occasional bit of Dove dark chocolate and chocolate milk when my sweet tooth is acting up.
Limit caffeine/drinking your calories. We also came up with the idea of limiting my caffeine intake to 2-3 times a week since I have a serious coffee and Coca~Cola addiction. Something that’s really helping me drink more water is the ability to track your water intake daily on the FitBit app. I’ve also been turning to sparkling water to help get the carbonation I often crave from pop.

Make a daily routine. Right now I’m still trying to get the hang of my new sleeping schedule, but I have a sort-of routine that I’ve been sticking to as of late. The whole point of it for me, personally is to make sure I achieved all I needed to in the day.

If you’ve been keeping up on current events you’ll know that the world has been a bit of a mess lately (to put it lightly). The war rages on in the Middle East, there have been countless senseless killings and mass murders, and an unbearable amount of hate going on make it a scary place to live in. This brings up the question: how are we supposed to radiate hope and be positive in a time like this?
At the beginning of the year, I promised myself I would be less cynical and began practicing positivity and gratitude. I began avoiding the negativity in my life; this included people, thoughts, messages, and words. I admit, it’s difficult to be positive every second of every day. I still have trials and tribulations, and people and circumstances that annoy or hurt me, everyone does. But it’s the fact that I’m taking the step toward living a more positive life that counts.
In my practice to live a more positive life, besides just thinking more positively, I’ve tried to be more conscious about what I’m posting on the internet. I began to post happy and inspirational posts or re-post things I find funny rather than things that will work people up. For example, I love politics, but if I post something political on Facebook or Twitter, odds are that I’m going to receive some nasty comments that are looking to start a fight. Which leads me to my next point: pick your battles. You don’t need to fight about everything you disagree with, sometimes it’s best to walk away and ignore a situation.
Furthermore, start focusing on doing something for someone at least once a day. You may make a huge difference in someone’s life without evening knowing it. Try to do a random act of kindness every day– it will help you and the other person feel an amazing sense of worth and happiness. If you’re religious, regardless of your religion, even sending up a prayer for someone or for the world as a whole can make the slightest difference. One of the best pieces of advice I’ve ever received is to not underestimate the power of prayer.
Finally, do things that make you happy to be alive, and surround yourself with people that love you and help you grow everyday.
As I reflect on the past year, I realize what all I have to be grateful for. This past year has been quite the roller coaster ride for me, but I wouldn’t be the person I am today with out those trials, successes, anxieties and everything in-between.
My Parents// First and foremost I owe my parents the world. I wouldn’t be the person I am today without their constant encouragement, love, and support in everything I undertake. You guys inspire me to work harder everyday and be the best version of myself. I can’t thank you enough for the sacrifices you have made for the boys and I. Every minute spent with you both is a reminder of how loved I am, and how honored I am to be your daughter.
My Brothers// Owen and Ethan, thank you for bringing intense laughter and an unusual sense of humor to everyday occurrences. I’m so lucky that we share such a strong sibling bond that I know will never falter regardless of the circumstances. Thank you also, for not being born female because we all know I don’t share so I don’t think that we would be as tight as we are.
My Extended Family// Although this year has been plagued with a slew of health issues, I’m so thankful that we all managed to band together through the tough times, and allowed our faith to be bigger than our fears.
Ryan// My rock, my love, thank you for pushing me to believe in myself when I was at my lowest, and for always loving me unconditionally. Everyday, we grow stronger together and I cannot wait to see how we flourish as a couple. The miles between us seem so small when you care about someone so immensely. I truly am the luckiest woman in the world.
Kelsey// Although we don’t see each other as much as we used to or would like to, whenever we are together, it’s like nothing ever changed. Thank you for the memories, laughs, not judging me (especially freshman year when I thought I was losing my mind & in my rebellious stage), the list goes on and on, but, above all, thank you for 16 years of friendship and many more to come. I’m so proud of you for kicking major ass in the nursing program; you’re going to be an absolutely amazing nurse!
My Sorority Sisters// Where to being? Thank you for inspiring me everyday. Thank you for giving me confidence and leadership skills that will last a lifetime. Thank you for giving me sisters I never had. Thank you for life-long friendships and memories. A thousand thanks to Eugenia, Ella, Sophronia, Octavia, Elizabeth, and Mary for courageously starting an amazing legacy that will live on forever.
Vitality Dance Team// Thank you for a second chance at doing what I love, and giving me such a fabulous team of women with such immense drive and passion. I don’t really know what I’m going to do after graduation without dance in my life, but I definitely will never stop doing what I love.
While I could go on and on about how much my life has been impacted, I’ll save that for a later date. These are just a few of the major things that have aided me in my growth this past year in spectacular ways.
