24 Hours at the Biltmore Estate

24 Hours at the Biltmore Estate

Last month, I had the pleasure of exploring the magnificent Biltmore Estate in Asheville, North Carolina. I’ve wanted to visit America’s largest residency for years, and finally had the opportunity to stay during our family road trip to the Outerbanks.

Built in 1895 by George Vanderbilt and his colleagues, the estate is teeming with fascinating history — for the full history of the Biltmore, click here. With everything from beautiful architecture, incredible food and wine and a lovely staff, it’s easy to see why thousands flock to the estate year after year.

Our visit lasted little more than 24 hours, but you could easily spend a week at the estate and never be bored. We stayed at the Village Hotel located in Antler Village on the 125,000 acre estate. Upon our arrival, we freshened up in our hotel rooms and headed out to explore. The first stop for my mom and I? The winery for some wine tasting!

We shipped home four bottles of exclusive Biltmore wine. I opted for the Library White – a sweet, Reisling-esque flavor – that includes an image from one of George’s favorite novels Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen; this also happens to be one of my favorite books of all-time so I just had to have it! My mother chose the classic rosé, not only because of the taste, but because of the gorgeous illustration of the main house featured on the bottle.

We spent the second day exploring the main house and it’s gardens. Here are a few of my favorite photos from our adventures:

George Vanderbilt was a well-read individual with a passion for literary works of all kinds. As you can see in some of the images, at this time, they are currently featuring costumes from some of his favorite novels that were turned into movies. I, being a lover of literature myself, was so inspired that I just HAD to pick up some of Mr. Vanderbilt’s favorites from the gift shop.

This was, easily, one of my favorite places we visited during this trip. I will most definitely be making a return trip in the future — I already told my boyfriend I will be dragging him here for a long weekend!

I highly, highly recommend taking a trip here and eating at the Bistro restaurant in Antler Village next time you are looking for a getaway!

Top Summer Trends

Hello and Happy June!

It is finally warm in Michigan which means it’s time to start breaking out your summer clothes and read up on this year’s trends. As I’ve mentioned in previous posts, while I don’t necessarily “abide” by trends, I like to take them and make them my own. Luckily, this season has some of my favorite trends of all time and I can’t wait to work them this summer!

img_1895
Gingham // It’s no surprise, that one of my favorite classic prints is at the top of my trend list this summer. Generally it’s one of those prints that people associate with a more preppy style; However, thanks to the help of companies such as Zara, gingham is becoming more versatile like this Zara dress.

Bell Sleeves // I’m LOVING this trend right now, and maybe spending a little too much money on it as well! Bell sleeves pair great with the off-the-shoulder trend that’s also in season. You can get both in this dress I just posted on my Instagram. PS – it’s SUPER affordable and currently on sale!

Retro Swimwear // One piece and high-waisted bathing suits are back! I never thought I would be loving this trend as much as I am now. I recently purchased one similar to this one and I can’t wait to rock it on my upcoming vacation.

Statement Earrings // The bigger, the bolder, the better. That seems to be the motto accompanying the latest jewelry craze. I’ve had my eyes on these tassel earrings and these bauble drop earrings both from Francesca’s.

Wrap Dresses // Midi, maxi, mini, you simply can’t go wrong with a wrap dress. They work for any occasion, which is especially convenient now that wedding season is upon us. I absolutely adore this gorgeous pale blue maxi wrap dress from Asos. It’s definitely a possibility for my uncle’s wedding later this year.

What are some of your favorite trends that you are trying out this summer?

Classic Summer Fashion Staples

Classic Summer Fashion Staples

Happy Friday!

With summer being (unfortunately) half-over, I’ve been reflecting a lot on my summer wardrobe. While, I admit, I do miss my sweaters, I’m not ready to pack away my sandals and sundresses. A lot of the clothing I own can be mixed and matched and worn during all four seasons; As a Michigander, this is pretty important as  so we need to be prepared to experience all four in the same week. So, without further ado, these are some of my summer fashion staples:

Sunhat (I prefer mine with a monogram) such as this one from Marley Lilly. I love my freckles, but I’m fully aware of the damage the sun can do. A big sunhat (or baseball cap like this) helps keep your face out of the sun no matter what the outdoor occasion!

My obsession with over-sized sunglasses like these by Kate Spade from Nordstrom began with the dawn of The Hills. Lauren Conrad immediately became, and still is today, my favorite fashion icon. Luckily for me, these fit my face shape perfectly enough that I do not look like a bug when I wear them.

Wedges/cute sandals that go with just about every outfit are a huge staple in my closet. My personal favorite are my gold Jack Rogers; they aren’t the comfiest shoes, but they definitely go with just about everything I own.

Sundresses, sundresses, sundresses! I can’t get enough of them. They can be super casual such as a tee-shirt dress or they could be a day-to-night dress by adding the right shoes and accessories.

Maxi-dresses/Skirts are perfect for the exact same reason as stated above. One of my favorites are the versatile ones that can be a dress or a skirt.

These are just a few of the twice-as-long list of some of my necessities for a stylish summer. What are some of yours?

Coastal Cuisine: Shrimp Boil Foil Packs

Coastal Cuisine: Shrimp Boil Foil Packs

Hello everyone!

As we’re all coming down from our 4th of July high and are headed back to work, I thought I’d share one of the amazing meals my family had this weekend. Inspired by a video from Delish on Facebook, we put our own little twist on the delicious dish!

https://www.facebook.com/plugins/video.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Fdelish%2Fvideos%2F10154268017647437%2F&show_text=0&width=400

Since my family loves seafood, my dad added lobster and scallops to some of the packets. One of the great things about this meal is that you can change up the packets to each person’s personal preference of food. It turned out to be an absolutely fabulous, healthy summer meal that everyone couldn’t get enough of!
